two ducks

two ducks, mallards, landed on the beach, by the tideline, and walked up to me.

i do not know why.

they walked up to me, and sifted sand amiably, as if that is how ducks talk about things, and walked on.

they left little duck feet prints.

i do not know where they went. perhaps into a condominium complex.

it is that kind of beach.

my beach, once, was one barrier island. then a great nor-easter in the thirties cut the island in two, carving an inlet.

there had been a road.

the road was cut in two, too.

and one half of the island became(becomes) built up. now tall condos are going in the height-limit area.

we don’t know why tall condos are going in the height-limit area. we don’t know who to ask about it. we are lucky to (a.) have a job, and (b.) stay out of jail.

this is the half of the island the ducks landed on. mallards.

you don’t often see mallards on the beach.

you don’t often see mallards walk into condominium complexes.

they walked right up to me, then walked away.
